About

Origins

Hi! My name is Sam. I graduated in 2020 from the University of Wisconsin River Falls with a Bachelor’s Degree in Equine Management.

After receiving my education, I realized that a lot of what I thought I knew about horses was flawed in so many ways. I learned that many of the practices I was following were harming my horses instead of making their lives better.

I created Monarch Wing Equestrian in order to share what I had learned from my education and what I continue to learn today. Follow me on a journey to become a better equine caretaker!

The Horses

We currently own 3 horses, Monarch, Stormy, and Shocker. Monarch is a 17 year old Appendix Quarter Horse mare. Stormy is a 10 year old Miniature Horse mare. Shocker is a 24 year old grade gelding.

Check out their cute faces plus a little bit of their background below!

My heart horse and this website’s namesake, Monarch <3

I first met Monarch when I was taking lessons at our old boarding barn. She was an underfed, misunderstood, nervous mare. When I learned that her owner wanted to sell her because she wasn’t “useful” anymore, I begged my mom to get her. I knew that she was special. Now, nearly 8 years later, she has taught me so much and I cannot wait to continue to grow with her.

Stormy, our Miniature Horse

Stormy is the first horse that my mom and I trained ourselves. We first met her when she was only 6 months old (and what a little fluffball she was). She was a crazy, sassy little pony who liked to run into people’s legs. After a lot of patience and work, we went on to show in many in hand classes. Now she is enjoying semi-retirement while we build our outdoor arena.

Shocker, our grade pony

Shocker is actually the pony that I learned to ride on nearly 15 years ago! We were reunited many years later when we boarded at his facility for a few years. After much discussion, we were able to take ownership of him and now he has found his forever home with us.

Blitz, our 32 year old rescue Paint Horse – R.I.P. 1990-2022

Blitz was another horse at our old boarding facility who was not fed or cared for properly by his previous owner. Before we started feeding him he was a walking skeleton. My mom befriended the woman who had known him for years and together they were able to arrange for Blitz to come with us when we moved. Blitz is 32 years old and may not have much time left with us but we are sure going to make sure he is comfortable and happy.

Update: Blitz crossed over the rainbow bridge on August 11th, 2022. He is missed dearly by many.
