Easy and Fun Ways to Spend the Holidays with Your Horse

Happy holidays, everyone! Can you believe it’s almost the end of 2022? Here’s hoping that 2023 brings you tons of good will.

This week I wanted to share some fun and easy ways to spend the holidays with your horse! Some of these will be free and some will cost you just a little bit! Hope you enjoy and once again, happy holidays!

Holiday Photo Shoot

This is one of my favorites! Simply head to the thrift store or dollar store near you and pick up some fun holiday headbands or hats. I always find an assortment of antlers, Santa hats, and more to put on my horses.

Always make sure to go slow with your horses if you have never tried to put a hat or headband on them. There was a time where Monarch would not have let me near her with one but with time and patience, she’s now a headgear wearing pro!

Make sure that the headbands aren’t uncomfortable and start snapping some cute photos! Heck, some of them could even make it to your Christmas card!

Bake Some Holiday Treats

If you’ve ever wanted to try making some fancy treats for your horse, now is the time! Cookie cutters are readily available at thrift and dollar stores and come in all sorts of cute shapes!

Find one or a few horse treat recipes you think your horse would enjoy and cut out the dough with the cutters. If you want to get extra fancy, you can try icing them with fun designs!

Of course, always be sure to feed sweet treats in moderation and to be sure you check that all treats are safe for horses to consume!

Make Snowmen

Now this is one that I have always wanted to do but have never gotten the chance. Build a snowmen (or 5) and make sure to give them a carrot nose and maybe an apple smile or buttons.

Once your snowmen are finished, you can bring your horse out to meet your creation. Then you can watch in horror as your horse starts to munch on your snowman’s face. Fun for everyone! Except the snowman…

Decorate Your Horse’s Stall or Paddock

Decorating your horse’s stall is a fun way to show your holiday spirit. Garland, banners, ornaments, etc. If your horse doesn’t have a stall, try decorating the fence around his paddock. I find that pine branches always look super nice.

Again, make sure that whatever you are decorating with is horse safe and will not break easily.

Have Your Horse Unwrap Gifts

For this activity, make sure you get a box that has a lid. This could be an old paper box or a gift box that you have lying around. Decorate the box however you wish (with horse safe items of course) and then place some of your horse’s favorite snacks inside.

Present the box to your horse and see how long it takes for them to get the treats out. This would be a great video and photo opportunity as well.

Just Spend Time

Of course, one of the easiest and arguably best ways to spend the holidays with your horse is to simply spend time with them. Give them a good grooming and their favorite treat and that’s a happy holiday in their book.
