Simple DIY Stirrup Covers Made From Repurposed Materials

Do you have an old t-shirt that is no longer wearable but you can’t bring yourself to throw it away? Have no fear! You can repurpose that shirt and make super easy DIY stirrup covers in under an hour!

For this project you’ll need enough fabric to make four 9″x9″ squares and two 1″x20″ strips pins or clips, ruler or tape measure, scissors or roller cutter, thread, and either a sewing machine or sewing needles.

Cutting Out the Pieces

Since the top I was using had some extra stitching and elastic, I started out by trimming it into two 9″ by 18″ squares. This allowed the fabric to lay flat for the next step.

Next, I needed to cut these two pieces in half to make the two sides of each stirrup cover. I used a ruler, cutting mat, and roller cutter to split them.

Now I have four separate 9″ by 9″ pieces and can move on to the next step.

Sewing the Stirrup Covers

Next, I folded over one end about 1/2″ to make a channel for the drawstring later.

I stitched this channel by staying close to the inside edge making sure to backstitch both ends to prevent unraveling.

Then I repeated the process for all four pieces.

Now it was time to make the pouches. You’ll want to place the right sides together making sure both drawstring channels are on the same end and then pin them in place.

Next I simply sewed the three sides on both covers, leaving the drawstring channel end open.

When I finished sewing, I flipped the pouches inside out and trimmed the excess thread. At this point we are so close to your very own DIY stirrup covers!

Adding the Drawstring

Next I took a strip of the fabric I cut off earlier and made to 18″ long strings. I attached a safety pin to the end and threaded each one through the drawstring channels on each bag.

The final step is to stich the drawstring together so that it doesn’t pull out unexpectedly.

The drawstring then functions as shown, simply place the bag over the stirrup and tighten to close.

Ta da! You now have your very own pair of DIY stirrup covers made from recycled materials. Of course, these steps can be followed with new fabric as well.

If you would like the drawstring to look a little nicer, you can also sew them inside out and then turn them right side out for a more polished look.

All this with only a little bit of waste! Perfect for stuffing on another project. Happy sewing!
