You may be wondering, why should I DIY a mane & tail detangler when I could simply just buy one off the shelf? Well, I’m glad you maybe asked!
First, many mane & tail detanglers contain ingredients like silicone. Over time, silicone can build up on your horse’s hair, resulting in a dry and dull appearance. No one wants that for their horse’s beautiful locks!
Second, and maybe most importantly, you can save so much money by making your own detangler. Most mane & tail detanglers on the market range from $10 to $15 a bottle. This may not sound like too big of an expense but, over time, this cost can add up!
Now that we’ve established a couple of the benefits of making your own detangler, let’s get into how to make some!
Using Garnier Fructis Leave-In Conditioner
The first way to make detangler is simply with Garnier Fructis Leave-In Conditioner and water. Start by squeezing about 5 ounces (half the bottle) of the conditioner into an empty spray bottle.
Then, simply fill up the rest of your spray bottle with water and shake vigorously. You’ll want to shake until the conditioner is pretty evenly dispersed in the bottle. Voila! You have a quick, effective, and inexpensive mane & tail detangler.
This spray smells amazing and works best when sprayed liberally and massaged into the hair before brushing. The mix does wonders for knotty tails, too! If the solution separates, just shake vigorously to remix it.
Shockingly, this spray only costs $2.00 a bottle! The only other expense you may initially incur is having to purchase a spray bottle but be sure to check around the house for ones you may be able to reuse. My favorite is the Little Giant Professional Series Sprayer.
Using Mane ‘n Tail Conditioner
Much like the previous mix, you can use Mane ‘n Tail Conditioner to make a quick detangler as well! For this one, measure out about 6 fluid ounces of conditioner and pour it into the bottle.
Again, fill up the bottle with water, shake vigorously, and you’re done! Just like the other detangler, shake well before use and massage into the hair before brushing!
This detangler is a little pricier at $4.50 a bottle but may be more accessible to those who already have some conditioner on hand.
