9 Signs It’s Time to Break Up with Your Horseback Riding Instructor

Do you want to learn how to ride horses? Have you found a horseback riding instructor but suddenly realize that you are no longer enjoying your lessons? Here are 9 reasons why you may want to break up with your horseback riding instructor.

1. They are disrespectful to you.

This one should be a no-brainer, but if you feel disrespected, it is time to look for a new instructor. Your time and money are not worth the emotional stress that these types of instructors bring.

2. They lack knowledge of the discipline you are working in.

If you want to learn dressage, you wouldn’t go to a cutting instructor. Many instructors are knowledgeable in only one discipline and if they mislead you with their credentials, it’s time to go.

3. They are often tardy and discourteous.

Your time is valuable and any horseback riding instructor who doesn’t understand that should get the boot.

4. They do not give you their full attention throughout the lesson.

As stated previously, you are a paying customer. If your horseback riding instructor doesn’t give you their full attention and is instead distracted by a dog or other people, you should look for instruction elsewhere.

5. They lack interest in your improvement.

I’m not saying that your riding instructor needs to be super involved in your life and successes. But if they don’t seem genuinely interested and happy in your progress, what’s the point?

6. They are a poor communicator.

To teach is to communicate. If your instructor can’t communicate the theories and instructions you need to know, how can you learn?

7. They don’t give constructive criticism and/or encouragement.

Let’s be real. You will make mistakes as you learn to ride. Instructors should offer fair and constructive criticism to help you improve without crushing your spirit.

8. They are unable to explain why their instructions will work.

Instructors who are unable to explain why you need “more leg” or why a certain aid works appear uneducated. Many times, people just regurgitate what they have been told over and over in their lessons and expect that to work. Teaching riding is a science and an art and your instructor should have an understanding of both parts.

9. They disrespect the lesson horse.

Along with respecting you, the instructor should always respect the lesson horse. Any mistreatment or unfairness towards the lesson horse by the instructor should be a clear sign for you to end your relationship.

Remember: Riding lessons should be fun!!!
