7 Reasons You Should Take Up Horseback Riding

As someone who has been riding for over 16 years and horse crazy for 20, I think everyone should ride a horse at least once in their life. This week, I wanted to share 7 reasons you should take up horseback riding! If you have any of your own reasons, feel free to share below!

reasons you should take up horseback riding

1. Improved Self-Esteem And Confidence

Studies have shown that children who participate in horseback riding show improved confidence and self-esteem. This is likely due to the challenging nature of horseback riding. In other words, being able to successfully ride a horse feels good and is a great confidence booster!

2. Improved Sense Of Responsibility

During riding lessons, you often are responsible for grooming and tacking up your lesson horse. By being assigned and completing these tasks, people have often reported an improved sense of responsibility.

3. Improved Problem-Solving and Decision-Making Skills

Horseback riding is a sport that requires constant decision-making and the occasional problem solving. You have to decide which cues to use and when, how much pressure to apply, and the list goes on.

In the case of say a spooky horse, you have to develop the problem-solving skills to help your horse through the scary situation.

4. Develop Positive Character Traits

According to the Certified Horsemanship Association, “horseback riding teaches patience, discipline, understanding, empathy, compassion, self-control, and dedication.”

5. Improved Cardiovascular Health

Horseback riding is exercise! By participating in the sport frequently, many see improved heart health and lower blood pressure as a result!

6. Companionship

Horses make great friends. They always have an ear to listen to your problems (and triumphs) and will never judge you. When you treat a horse well, they will reward you with their companionship.

7. Fun

Finally, and perhaps the best reason, horseback riding is fun! Duh!
