9 Products You Need to Upgrade Your Grooming Kit

In my previous post, I listed out a few products and tools that make up a basic but effective grooming kit. To reiterate, all you need is a rubber curry comb, a stiff body brush, a soft body brush, a hair brush for the mane and tail, and a hoof pick.

However, there may come a time when you want to upgrade your kit and add a few products that make grooming easier. In a world where there are so many options for grooming tools and products, let me give you a little guidance.

Here’s nine products that I like to keep stocked in my grooming kit and recommend to anyone who wants to up their grooming game!

1. Absorbine Miracle Groom

Grooming in the winter can be a pain. If you don’t have an indoor shower stall with heated water, you can throw bathing out the window. Luckily, Absorbine came up with a solution! Miracle Groom Bath in a Bottle!

I am amazed at how easily it helps lift dirt and clean spots all without soap and water. How cool is that?! It is perfect for those winter shows or for anyone who wants to give their horse a quick cleanup without the hassle of a full-on bath.

2. Farnam Slick ‘N Easy

I’m sure that most people have heard of this product but I’m still going to mention it. When I first tried this product, I was amazed at how easily it removes dirt and hair. It also makes a satisfying noise when you use it. 🙂

When it gets dull, you can scrape the long edge on some concrete and voila — just like new again. Farnam claims it can groom up to 12 horses and I would believe it! This mighty little block lasts a long time and is well worth the buy.

3. Grooming Gloves

If I had to pick one item to recommend you add to your grooming kit immediately, it would be one of these gloves. They are perfect for faces and legs as well as horses that are more sensitive to harsher curries.

I first discovered this when we purchased Monarch. She is pretty sensitive to rougher brushes and curries and I found these mitts as the perfect solution. They are now probably her favorite grooming tool and are gentle enough that you can really itch those spots!

4. Mini Rubber Curry Comb

If you have ever groomed a horse’s face, you may notice that some object to the rougher brushes. I don’t blame them! Some curry combs are hard and stiff making it pretty uncomfortable on their bony heads.

I always recommend upgrading to softer, fine tooth curry for these more delicate areas. There are a few different styles available and numerous colors as well. Your horse will surely appreciate it!

5. The Ultimate Hoof Pick

This is the last hoof pick you will ever buy. It is so sturdy and so effective at cleaning out horse hooves I can hardly describe it. The Ultimate Hoof Pick is extremely comfortable to hold and allows you to get proper leverage for those stubborn hoof cakes.

This hoof pick makes picking out feet quick and easy and comes in a few different colors as well! They may seem a bit pricey but I promise you they are well worth the expense. The company even offers a lifetime replacement guarantee!

6. Absorbine Cool Down Rinse

I actually initially tried this product as a freebie from a tack store that I had visited. After mixing up a bottle and trying it out on Monarch, I was hooked!

I would spray it all over Monarch at the end of our grooming session to provide some minor cooling action and as a coat conditioner. Monarch was shining all summer long! Not to mention this stuff smells AMAZING.

7. Shapley’s M-T-G

This is another product I’m sure that everyone has heard of but I am going to recommend it anyway. M-T-G is my go to for any sort of skin gunk I find on my horses.

Most commonly I use it on Monarch’s back legs to get rid of her cannon keratosis or “stud crud”. Although she is not a stud, she still gets the crud. She gets it almost every summer and M-T-G is always a lifesaver at helping to remove it.

We also like to use it on any rubbed tail heads to help soothe the area and encourage hair regrowth. As you can see on the front of the bottle, it can do quite a bit!

8. Cowboy Magic Green Spot Remover

A lifesaver for show horses and for anyone who appreciates some clean chrome, Cowboy Magic GreenSpot Remover is an amazing product. Just like the Miracle Groom, GreenSpot Remover is a waterless shampoo that erases grass stains like magic.

I use it most often on Monarch’s legs before shows as she always finds a way to get them dirty. It is also a great tool to have for grays like Stormy that love to roll around in their own feces like it’s their day job.

9. Mane ‘n Tail Ultimate Gloss Conditioner

While I do already love Mane ‘n Tail’s regular conditioner, this one is on a whole other level. If you have a horse that has thick, coarse hair, this is the conditioner for you.

You can easily get a silky, show ready finish in just one short wash. They also claim that the conditioner can be used as a leave-in treatment which is perfect for those lazy days.
