7 Clever Uses for Dry Erase Boards in Your Boarding Barn

As someone who has experienced 15 stables in my time as an equestrian, I cannot stress enough how much communication in boarding barns is critical! With so many people coming and going at all times of the day, it can be hard to relay important information to the right people. That’s where dry erase boards come in!

In this post, I’ll share some clever uses for dry erase boards that help keep communication open in our barn or stable.

Boarder Phone Numbers

If there is ever an emergency (especially with a boarder’s horse), you will want easy access to the right phone number. These numbers can be posted on each individual stall, but a master list is great for quick reference.

I would recommend writing the numbers with a wet-erase marker. This prevents any accidental removal of information.

Stall Signs

A lot of people make stall signs more complicated than they need to be. For our barn, we plan on hanging smaller dry erase boards on each stall. These boards will display the horse’s name and any feed information or special instructions necessary. Being dry erase, it will be much easier to switch out and change information as needed.

Feed Charts

Since many equine diets can change throughout the year, a large dry erase board in the feed room or area is a great tool. Using thinner tape or even a sharpie, you can make a permanent chart on the board and fill in any necessary information for each individual horse.

Emergency Numbers (with barn address)

Clearly post your stable’s address for anyone at the barn to see. In case of an emergency, this information is extremely important. A list of veterinarians, emergency operators, and farriers should accompany this information.

To Do Lists

People can’t know what needs to be fixed if they don’t know what’s broken. Having an accessible to do list that anyone could add to aids in clear communication and things actually getting fixed in a timely manner!

Barn shopping list

It is annoying when you aren’t informed when something breaks at the stable. By having a shopping list posted, people can make note of things that need to be purchased for replacement.

Location of key things around the property

Everyone in the stable should be able to determine where important emergency features are around the property. This could include:

  • Fire extinguishers
  • Light switches and outlets
  • First aid kits
  • Water shut off valves
