It’s my birthday! I’m finally 25 years old. Time sure flies when you’re having fun. For this week, I wanted to share 25 equestrian lessons that I have learned over the years. Hope you enjoy!
1. Ignorance is not bliss. You need to examine your practices to see if you are potentially harming your horse.
2. Comparison never ends well. What you see online is rarely the whole picture.
3. The horse is never the problem. Examine what YOU may be doing wrong.
4. Equipment choice matters. Less is more.
5. Your horse really doesn’t mind if you don’t ride.
6. Horses don’t last forever. You will have to say goodbye at some point.
7. Always lead with kindness. Gentle approaches can get you much farther than the harsher alternatives.
8. Empathy is key.
9. Money matters. Some people are going to have more advantages than you do.
10. Money doesn’t matter. You can get by with less.
11. Horse care is not as complicated as people try to make it.
12. Horses are horses and they will behave as such.
13. The horse’s needs always come first.
14. Tradition is not king.
15. There are a lot of bad equestrians in the world. Try to be one of the good ones.
16. You are in control. Make changes when you find it necessary.
17. Less is more.
18. Age doesn’t matter. Older horses can do a lot of the things younger horses can.
19. A lot of people have no idea what they are doing.
20. Some people use horses for personal gain at the expense of the horse.
21. Friendship and comradery are important.
22. There is no “method”.
23. You’re going to get hurt. Physically and mentally.
24. It is important to know when to let go.
25. There is always more to learn.
Never stop picking up books, watching valid instructional videos, or discussing key topics with others. There is always more to learn and you should gobble up as much information as you can.
