The equine industry is a wild place. Everyone does things in their own unique way (which isn’t always a good thing). This week I wanted to share some of the craziest things I have heard during my time working in the equine industry.
1. “Don’t feed hay before the lesson. The horses will get an upset stomach.”
-Said by a lesson facility owner who was constantly shorting their lesson horses hay
2. “I don’t need to buy tank heaters. If the horses are thirsty, they will eat the snow.”
-Said by a boarding facility owner who believed it would cost an extra $1000 a month to have 4 tank heaters (reality is about $40-50 a month per heater per tank heater manufacturer)
3. “We don’t clean the barn on Sundays.”
-Said by two boarding facility owners on two separate occasions
4. “We didn’t budget for shelters.”
-Said by a boarding facility owner when discussing the facilities
5. “We’ll have to start feeding less hay so we don’t run out.”
-Said by a boarding facility owner who didn’t want to purchase more hay
6. “If you don’t want to jump her, you might as well sell her. She’ll never be a pleasure horse.”
-Said by a previous riding instructor about Monarch
7. “It’s fine to feed horses moldy hay. They’ll eat around it.”
-Said by a boarding facility owner who was constantly buying moldy hay because they got a deal
8. “[My horse has been dead lame for 3 weeks] because the farrier trimmed her toes too short.”
-Said by a boarding facility owner about a horse that turned out to have laminitis and be insulin resistant
9. “He’s fine!”
-Said by a boarder who was beating the living crap out of her 3-year-old gelding for not bending well enough
10. “The horses don’t mind being inside!”
-Said by a boarding facility owner after horses had been kept inside for 10 days with no turnout
